Boeing, battery-maker disagree on fixes

Boeing met the FAA to propose a battery fix so the 787 can start flying again.

Battery fires have been the primary concern with the 787.

Boeing and Yuasa have disagreed about what should be included in a package of measures to get the 787 back in the air, The Wall Street Journal has reported, citing government and industry officials.

The Japanese company that makes the lithium-ion batteries for the 787 reportedly believes the fix should include a voltage regulator that could stop electricity from entering the battery.

While Boeing proposed its fix to the United States Federal Aviation Administration on February 22, Yuasa told the FAA on February 21 that some tests indicated a power surge outside the battery requiring the fix.

“Our proposal includes multiple layers of protection covering the known potential probable causes of the events,” Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel reportedly said about the planemaker’s proposal.
