Three-day weekend
This year, Eid Al Fitr is most likely to fall on Friday 21 April in the UAE, according to the International Astronomy Centre. If the dates are confirmed, UAE residents can expect a three-day break.
“Islamic Countries are expected to sight the crescent of Shawwal on Thursday, April 20. Sighting the crescent on that day might not be possible with the naked eye or with a telescope from all over Asia and Australia, while there is a possibility that it can be sighted from parts of the Islamic world,” the International Astronomical Centre said, adding that in such circumstances, most Islamic countries might announce the start of the month on the next day, and accordingly, many countries are expected to announce Friday 21 April as the first day of Eid Al Fitr.
Islamic events are determined by moon sightings, as they follow a lunar calendar. Consequently, the specific dates for Eid Al Fitr will be declared after Ramadan, once moon sightings have been confirmed.
With many UAE residents planning their air travel around long public holidays, the Eid holiday is often a busy season for airlines, airports, and other industry stakeholders.
