The Dubai Air Navigation Service (dans) has implemented new air traffic management procedures designed to meet the needs of increasingly congested airspace over the next several years.
The air space restructuring (ARP) project is designed to meet the amounts of air traffic forecast for 2020 and the years after, as well as increase access to all the UAE’s airports. As part of the strategy, dans has implemented more than 90 new air traffic management procedures, introduced 150 new navigation waypoints, and trained an additional 168 air traffic controllers.
According to dans, the air space restructuring programme will allow airlines to save $14.6 billion worth of fuel each year, and reduce C02 emissions by 90,401 tonnes.
“We are tremendously proud to be amongst the leading entities who have contributed and supported in the delivery and implementation of the new airspace design of the UAE,” said Mohammed Ahli, Director General of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority. “The past three years whilst working on the project, have demonstrated the importance of cross sector collaboration for the greater benefit of the United Arab Emirates.”
“We are also proud to witness the aviation sector arrive at new and unprecedented fronts, as it continues to cater to its prestigious customers of airports, airlines and authorities,” he added. “Moreover, it is also crucial to acknowledge the tremendous and exemplary efforts exerted by the various project teams, who ensured the successful delivery and implementation of the project”.
The first phase of the project which delivered the new design of the terminal airspace of the UAE was fully funded by Dubai Air Navigation Services. Additionally, the organisation in partnership with Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has been a major shareholder in the third phase of the project, which saw the implementation of the final design in Dubai and across the UAE.
