Dubai International Airport (DXB) handled over 43 million passengers in the first of the year, partly propelled by a double-digit surge in passenger traffic in June, Dubai Airports announced on Wednesday.

According to Dubai Airports, the H1 2018 total of 43,739,105 represents a 1.6 increase over the 43,054,268 passengers recorded over the same time period in 2017.

In June, passenger traffic rose 11.7% year-on-year to 6,795,492 passengers, largely due to the impact of Ramadan on passenger traffic in 2017.

The countries of the CIS were found to have recorded traffic growth of 50.6% in June, compared to Eastern Europe (33.6%), Africa (20%) and North America (16.9%).

In terms of passenger volume, India was the top destination with 968,931 passengers, followed by Saudi Arabia (504,968), the UK (454,477), Pakistan (349,633) and the US (291,391). Of individual cities, London was the top destination (280,941), followed by Mumbai (195,213) and New Delhi (173,820).

Flight movements in June rose 6.4% year-on-year from 30,841 in June 2017 to 32,805 in June this year. Year to date, flight movements were down 2%  to 201,784, compared to 205,998 in the first six months of 2017.

The average number of passengers per flight during the month stood at 213 compared to 203 during the same month in 2017, a growth of 4.9%.

The Dubai Airports figures also show that DXB handled 214,612 tonnes of cargo in June, compared to 215,668 over the same month in 2017. Year-to-date, the airport has handled 1,268,161, down 2.7% from the 1,302,911 tonnes recorded in H1 2017.
