FAA taps NovAtel to deliver enhancements to North America navigation network

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a contract to NovAtel, who will produce and deliver 40 Ground Uplink Station (GUS) Signal Generators. The units are expected to be deployed within FAA’s safety of life WAAS navigation service.

In addition to the delivery of the GUS Signal Generators, NovAtel will also provide engineering support services for its Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) products that are currently utilised by the FAA. This includes the WAAS G-III reference receiver platform.

Devised and managed by the FAA, the WAAS network is a safety-critical navigation aid that enables aircraft to utilise US Global Positioning System (GPS) for all phases of flight. Pilots can utilise the data, which records the departure and arrival of any aircraft within a WAAS coverage average, to make devise precise approach vectors to any airport.

NovAtel’s GUS Signal Generators are designed for utilisation with the SBAS ground uplink systems and include independent L1 and L5 signal paths. The latter allows users to monitor the frequency and phase of L1 and L5 code and carrier for dual-frequency SBAS. Additionally, A GUS receiver system designed for the WAAS G-III receiver platform is set to be deployed alongside the GUS Signal Generator, in effect, modernising the GUS control loop.
