Emirates cancels Damascus flights

Citing the "safety of our passengers and crew," the airline has cancelled its daily service to the Syrian capital.

Emirates Airline has cancelled its daily flights to and from Damascus until further notice.

The airline said on its website that “the safety of our passengers and crew is of the highest priority and will not be compromised.”

In related news, the airline will put giant stickers on all 31 of its A380s to promote the UAE’s bid to host the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. The first aircraft with a “Expo 2020, DubaiUAE, Candidate City” banner flew to Beijing last week.

The 31 A380s fly to 21 destinations, including the recently-added Singapore and Moscow.

“The Emirates’ A380s are such a powerful symbol of progress and represent the rapid economic and infrastructural journey Dubai has undertaken,” said Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline. “Emirates operates the largest A380 fleet in the world and with the interest generated globally by these magnificent aircraft, they will be a powerful tool to further Dubai’s bid.”

World Expo is held every five years and last took place in Shanghai. Dubai is competing against Ayutthaya in Thailand, Ekaterinburg in Russia, Izmir in Turkey and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The winning city will be announced in November 2013 following a vote by the 161 member nations of the Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).

This would be the first time the event would be held in the Middle East if Dubai won, and Emirates is a Premier Partner for the event.
