RAK Airways, the state-backed carrier of Ras Al Khaimah, on Sunday said it would resume services after a 12-month lull with two routes to Jeddah and Calicut, India.
The carrier, which claims paid-up share capital of AED568m, said it will operate four weekly flights on each route in a bid to capitalise on traffic from pilgrims and migrant workers.
The airline suspended operations a year ago in the wake of the global financial downturn, which caused billions of dollars in losses to airlines.
“[The airline] was forced to close a year ago owing to the extremely tough market situation,” said Sheikh Omar Bin Saqr Qassimi, chairman, RAK Airways. ” But the time is right for a spectacular re-entry into the market.”
Launch fares will start at AED10. The airline will operate a single 737-400 aircraft.
“We plan to break even on operational expenses iin our first year,” said Omar Jahameh, CEO of the carrier.
He said he expected the airline to announce new routes within 12 months.
