In the first seven months of 2019, Rwanda's national carrier, RwandAir, has seen a 17% increase in passenger traffic to and from Dubai, reported sister title Arabian Business.
According to Rwanda’s New Times, Al Rais Travel – which represents the airline in Dubai – also saw a 38% increase in cargo traffic.
In an interview with the newspaper, Al Rais Group deputy managing director Mohammed Al Rais said that in 2018, a total of 42,000 passengers travel from Dubai to Kigali using the airline, 20,000 of them between January and July. In comparison, 240,000 passengers used the airline through July 2019, while cargo rose from 200 to 280 tonnes year-on-year.
The airline now operates a larger Airbus A330, as opposed to the Boeing 737 it previously used. Flights between Kigali and Dubai operate four times each week.
