The winner of the Engineering Innovation of the Year category is Olympus and its videoscope for aircraft engine inspection.
Olympus’s Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) is a key element of aircraft maintenance, preventing component degradation or other accidents than can result in significant losses.
A key area for RVI in aerospace is the gas turbine or jet engine. Remove Visual Inspection effectively extends the reach of the human eye into areas otherwise inaccessible without disassembly or destruction.
Gas turbines present a challenging environment in which to work with a videoscope or video borescope, with some areas being highly reflective, such as turbine blades and burner assemblies; and some areas extremely dark.
Capturing a bright, sharp and clear image in these areas is equally difficult, and certain advances in RVI technology has helped to improve workflow.
Although other inspection technologies exist, RVI is the only method that provides true-to-life images for confident decision-making, according to the firm.
