During a Senate committee held last Tuesday, Audu Ogbeh, Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture, asserted that some wealthy Nigerians were ordering pizzas from London and were having them delivered back home on British Airways flights.

The comment was shared part of a speech in which Ogbeh was discussing the country’s reliance on imports that was deterring the development of Nigeria’s agriculture sector.

"Do you know, sir, that there are Nigerians who use their cellphones to import pizza from London?" said Ogbeh.

"Buy in London, they bring it on British Airways in the morning to pick up at the airport."

"It is a very annoying situation," he added, "and we have to move a lot faster in cutting down some of these things”, he added.

The Minister went on to add that some citizens import common ingredients, such as rice and tomato paste, as means of displaying their wealth and status.
