Emirates Airlines has updated its checked baggage policy that will see a reduction in baggage allowance for some economy-class ticket holders.

Effective from 4 February 2019, passengers travelling with either ‘special’ or ‘saver’ tickets will now be allowed to carry 15kg and 25kg of checked baggage, respectively. In both cases, passengers were previously allowed to carry 5kg more than the standing figure.

The development marks a major shift in the Emirates’ approach to baggage, an area which the carrier has long been ‘generous’ with and arguably one of its competitive strengths over other airlines across the globe.

Following the announcement of the airline's change in baggage policy, Emirates released a statement clarifying the change in baggage allowance.

“After a careful review of customer feedback and their travel preferences, Emirates can confirm that we will be updating our standard free baggage allowance for Economy Class travel, effective for bookings made on or after 4th February 2019. This adjustment enables Emirates to offer our customers more flexibility to select the fare and associated benefits that best meet their travel needs," the official statement read.

"Depending on the choice of fare type, Emirates’ Economy Class passengers can still enjoy up to 35kgs (or 2 pieces of 23kgs) of free baggage allowance. Skywards members continue to enjoy additional baggage benefits in accordance with their membership tier status. Customers can also opt to purchase additional baggage allowance at attractive rates if they do so online in advance of their travel. For more information, please visit emirates.com."

While both ‘special’ or ‘saver’ ticket holders will have to adhere to the updated policy, baggage allowance for passengers with a ‘flex’ ticket is expected to remain 30 kg. Similarly, ‘flex plus’ ticket holders will still be allowed to carry 35 kg.

First Class and Business Class passengers will remain unaffected and will continue to be allowed to carry 50kg and 40kg, respectively. The allowance for hand baggage remains at 7kg across all cabins.

Emirates Airline’s passengers who possess tickets issued prior to 4 February 2019 will be able to take advantage of the carrier’s previous baggage policies.
