Planning and preparations have been underway for almost two years in close coordination with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, airlines, dnata, the regulator and a host of other service partners to make sure this massive project goes off without a hitch, says Griffiths.

Operations teams for both Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) are reportedly “good to go” for the start of a 45-day long refurbishment of DXB’s southern runway, according to Dubai Airports.

Scheduled to run from 16 April to 30 May, the refurbishment project is aimed at upgrading the runway to meet future traffic growth demand.

It was previously reported that while the project is expected to disrupt capacity at the airport, the optimisation of DXB’s runway by scheduling experts will see a reduction in the number of available seats by only 29%.

Additionally, the added capacity provided by DWC will see the number of flights operating across Dubai Airport’s system reduce by only 19% with a seat reduction of 20%. DWC expects to operate an average of 145 passenger flights per day.

Commenting on the upcoming project, Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: “Planning and preparations have been underway for almost two years in close coordination with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, airlines, dnata, the regulator and a host of other service partners to make sure this massive project goes off without a hitch.”

Assisting passengers during this period, Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority will provide bus services to DWC and have dedicated a fleet of taxis to serve the airport over the course of the closure period.

Dubai Airports has also introduced a free express bus service between DXB and DWC that will operate every 30 minutes.

“We are encouraging passengers to confirm their airport of departure before they set out to take their flights but otherwise they can expect smooth operations and great service,” said Griffiths.
